MEETING THE LEADERS FOR PEACE

Pedaling to countries around globe I have met influential leaders requesting for making an impact to have a peaceful world and green and safe environment for our future generations.

On starting November 2013, I had a chance to meet two influential personalities working for peace in Liberia- the country that is striving for stable peaceful environment after years of armed conflict.MEETING-THE-LEADERS-FOR-PEACE

Karin Landgren is the Special Representative of Secretary General (SRSG) for United Nations Peace Keeping Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and it was a delight to share some time with her on 5th of September in order to share my message. She has also been the chief of United Nation Mission in Nepal(UNMIN) that has played a key role in helping my homeland get out of the armed conflict. This has added more importance for me to meet her.

After 12 years of armed conflict in Nepal, the rebellion party Maoist joined the main line politics on 2006. After which the need of conflict resolution was prime. From 2007 to 2011 United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) was given to monitor and manage arms as well as armies of both side- the government and the Maoist (rebellion). UNMIN assisted both parties to arrange ceasefire, provided technical assistance to the Election commission in planning.  It helped election commission in the planning, preparation and conduct of election of a Constituent Assembly in a free and fair atmosphere. UNMIN played crucial role in terms of peace building in Nepal and Karin Landgren headed it for the period.MEETING-THE-LEADERS-FOR-PEACE1-150x150

The meeting started with a ‘Namaste’ – a nepalese greeting from SRSG, Landgren, after which I expressed my respect with ‘Khada’– a cloth to express respect in nepalese tradition.MEETING-THE-LEADERS-FOR-PEACE2

I shared something about my travels and the hope I carry while travelling. It was a joyful experience to get her admiration. She expressed her deep interest for sustainable peace in Nepal and her wish that upcoming second constituent assembly election would be successfully carried on. It was some precious time to share about peace with the leader of peace.MEETING-THE-LEADERS-FOR-PEACE3
